The Proposal (2009) |
In The Proposal, we are thrust into the fiercely competitive world of New York publishing, where Margaret Tate is the ultimate cruel and exacting book editor. Her overworked and underappreciated assistance, Andrew Paxton, takes the brunt of her harsh remarks and unwavering quest of excellence. Strong Canadian immigrant Margaret is in danger of being deported back to her home country.
Margaret comes up with a desperate scheme right before the immigration inspector shows around. She corners Andrew, accusing him of being her American fiancé. Startled and enraged, Andrew declines to be coerced. Margaret, however, makes a compelling—if manipulative—proposition. She'll get Andrew a promotion and the much-needed reference letter for his dream job if he accepts her plan to stage an engagement and goes to his family's Alaskan house on her grandmother's birthday. Reluctantly, Andrew gives in as he is trapped and has few other choices.
They experience a maelstrom of embarrassment and cultural collisions on their way to Alaska. Margaret, a native of the big city, finds it difficult to embrace Sitka's small-town charm. Margaret is welcomed into the warm and inviting family of Andrew, especially his grandmother Gammy, who welcomes her with open arms. Despite her initial discomfort, Margaret finds herself pulled to Andrew's family's real warmth and hospitality as she plays the adoring fiancée.
Margaret and Andrew grow to grudgingly appreciate each other as they get through fishing expeditions, family meals, and the inevitable gossip in small towns. While Margaret finds a gentler side to Andrew's sardonic character, Andrew observes Margaret's fragility and devotion to her career. Their forced intimacy creates an unexpected chemistry that challenges their well-maintained façade.
When Gretchen (Malin Åkerman), Andrew's ex-girlfriend, shows there, things get more complicated. Gretchen, who is suspicious and envious, seeks to find out what Margaret is really up to. Margaret, meantime, finds it difficult to connect with Gammy because she can see through the well-staged display of affection.
The truth eventually surfaces at a tumultuous family meal. Heartbroken by the lie, Gammy rejects Andrew. Margaret extends her sincere apologies after recognizing the repercussions of her conduct. The outburst of disappointment and rage from the family forces Margaret and Andrew to face their own emotions.
Now that their fake relationship has been revealed, Margaret might be deported. Realizing how much he has come to love Margaret, Andrew takes a selfless action. Declaring their connection genuine, he tells the immigration official that he loves her.
Margaret chooses to come honest after being moved by Andrew's gesture. She accepts full responsibility for her conduct and acknowledges the entire hoax. But when the immigration officer isn't persuaded, her honesty backfires. Margaret, heartbroken and with just a one-way ticket back to Canada, says goodbye to Andrew and his family.
Andrew understands he can't let Margaret go when he gets back to New York. He dashes to the airport, where he attempts getting through security, setting off a funny montage. Andrew swoops in, expressing his love again just as Margaret gets on the aircraft. His genuineness comes through this time, and Margaret decides to stay.
Margaret returns to Alaska at the end of the movie, but this time she is Andrew's true girlfriend. She has embraced Sitka's beauty and the love of his family. With a bright future ahead of them, they approach the immigration officer with a sincere friendship.
